Awareness Program For World Breastfeeding Week 2025

FLO Chennai, led by Chairperson Niyati A. Mehta, and the Department of Community Medicine at Annaii Medical College, in collaboration with Rajalakshmi Nursing College, conducted a meaningful and well-attended awareness program in observance of World Breastfeeding Week 2025 at the Community Hall in Pudunallur, one of the rural field practice areas of Annaii Medical College.

As a part of the FLO Kavach initiative for promoting the well-being of women, the event focused on spreading awareness about the vital role of breastfeeding in maternal and child health. The program commenced with a warm welcome address by Dr. Vikram, Associate Professor of Community Medicine, who also served as the event’s host. The dignitaries for the day—the Panchayat President and the Ward Counsellor—were honoured, setting a tone of collaboration between medical institutions and local governance.

Dr. Sivagurunathan, Head of the Department of Community Medicine, delivered a detailed and compelling address on the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months. He spoke on its critical role in reducing neonatal and infant mortality rates and highlighted the risks associated with bottle feeding and inappropriate weaning practices. His talk was followed by a short but impactful address by the Panchayat President, who appreciated the initiative and urged the community to actively engage in maternal and child health programs.

A lively and interactive Q&A session saw Dr. Sivagurunathan address various concerns and doubts from the audience, making expert knowledge easily accessible and understandable.

Adding a practical and policy-oriented perspective, Dr. Vanitha, Dean of Annaii Medical College, shared the dos and don’ts of breastfeeding, the importance of Kangaroo Mother Care, and spoke about various government schemes that support maternal and child health.

The program came to life with two culturally engaging and informative performances—a skit and a traditional Villipaatu—presented by students of Rajalakshmi Nursing College under the guidance of lecturer Mrs. Nandhini and Principal Dr. Anitha. These performances vividly illustrated breastfeeding best practices, common myths, nutritional tips to enhance breast milk production, and correct feeding positions, all through a medium that was accessible and enjoyable for the audience.

The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Dr. Sarath Kumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Community Medicine, who acknowledged the efforts of everyone involved. Over 110 participants, including residents, healthcare professionals, and community leaders, attended this awareness program. Blending medical expertise with cultural expression, the program successfully empowered the local community with knowledge and tools to support healthier beginnings for mothers and infants.
